Beware of New Rental Scam Targeting Unsuspecting Tenants

Read Time:1 Minute, 40 Second

In a recent surge of scams targeting unsuspecting tenants, con artists have devised a cunning ploy to exploit renters in the area.

The scam involves fraudulent messages sent out under the guise of rental management, urging tenants to pay their rent through a seemingly legitimate Pay Bill business number.

The scammers, posing as Rental Management, are duping tenants into making payments that never reach their landlords.

The scammers send out official-looking notices, such as the one below:

NOTICE! Dear Tenant, We’re writing to remind you of your rent payments due first of October. Make arrangements to pay your rent earlier through the Pay Bill business no: 4109535. Account no: Enter your full name as the account. Thank you for your continued cooperation. Sincerely, Rental Management.

Several tenants have fallen victim to this sophisticated ruse, where they transfer their hard-earned money into accounts controlled by these criminals, believing they are fulfilling their rental obligations.

Rental Management companies have been quick to denounce these activities, emphasizing that they do not request rent payments through insecure channels like text messages or emails. Moreover, no legitimate rental entity would ask tenants to transfer money to personal accounts or use vague Pay Bill business numbers.

To safeguard yourself from falling prey to such scams, it is crucial to verify any payment requests directly with your property management office. Do not make any payments before confirming the authenticity of the request. Always ensure you are using verified payment methods, and refrain from sharing personal or financial information via unsecured channels.

If you have received a suspicious message like the one mentioned above, do not respond to it. Instead, report it to the local authorities and your property management company immediately.

Let us remain vigilant and united against these unscrupulous individuals preying on unsuspecting tenants. By staying informed and cautious, we can protect ourselves and our neighbors from falling victim to these malicious schemes.

Stay safe, and let’s look out for one another.

Sincerely,
Nakuru Times Editorial Team
