Calls for ICC Investigation Into President William Ruto Amidst Allegations of Police Killings During Protests

In the wake of mounting international pressure, the call for justice in Kenya is intensifying, with demands for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate President William Ruto and senior police officers for alleged involvement in the killings of hundreds of young Kenyans, primarily from Generation Z, during recent protests.
The demonstrations, which spanned over two months, were met with a heavy-handed police response, resulting in numerous deaths and disappearances, sparking outrage both within Kenya and abroad.
During a recent visit to Kenya, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy highlighted the growing concern in the United States over the handling of the protests by Kenyan authorities.
Senator Murphy called for the arrest and prosecution of the police officers involved, but notably refrained from calling for a direct ICC investigation into President Ruto himself.
This omission, however, has not silenced those who believe the responsibility for the killings lies at the highest levels of government.
Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity, a prominent human rights advocate, has been vocal in his demand for the ICC to take action against President Ruto.
He argues that the killings, which took place during what were largely peaceful protests, amount to crimes against humanity and should be investigated by the ICC.
Dr. Kinity also expressed concern that President Ruto may attempt to eliminate witnesses, a fear rooted in past allegations during the post-election violence case that was brought before the ICC following Kenya’s 2007-2008 election crisis.
“The ICC should open a case against William Ruto and the police officers responsible for the heinous killing of hundreds of Gen Zs,”
Dr. Kinity stated. “At the same time, great care should be taken to prevent William Ruto from killing the witnesses as he did during the ICC post-election violence case at The Hague.
All efforts should also be made to prevent him from silencing the police officers he used in these killings, as was the case in the last post-election violence investigation.”
The Kenyan constitution explicitly protects the right to peaceful demonstration and picketing, making the government’s response to the protests even more alarming to both local and international observers.
The actions of the police, captured in numerous photos and videos, have drawn widespread condemnation, with human rights groups and foreign governments urging for accountability.
As calls for justice grow louder, the potential for an ICC investigation looms, with significant implications for Kenya’s political landscape.
Dr. Kinity has also urged the Kenyan military, which he describes as underpaid and possibly less compromised than the police, to help ensure the safety of potential witnesses in any future investigations.
The international community, including the United States and other powerful nations, is being called upon to support these efforts to prevent further extrajudicial killings and to ensure that justice is served.
According to Dr. Kinity, allowing President Ruto to run for re-election in 2027 without addressing these grave allegations could undermine the integrity of Kenya’s democracy and perpetuate a cycle of violence and corruption.
