Disaster strikes at Naduat Gold Mine in Turkana as County intensifies Rescue efforts

A tragic accident has shaken the community of Naduat in Nakalale Ward, Turkana North after a gold mine shaft collapsed on six artisanal miners on Monday evening.

Three people are feared dead after being trapped with authorities managing to rescue one miner alive though with a broken arm.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the mine caved in without warning while operations were underway, trapping six miners underground.

Two survivors had by evening been rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital. Today’s survivor identified as Ewesit who spent the night in the rubbles indicated that three more people were still strapped.

Ewesit said that he was unable to free his hands from the debris, a situation that has sparked urgent rescue efforts from Kenya Red Cross, Turkana County government and security officials who are relying on a standby excavator.

The sudden collapse has plunged the local community into shock, with workers and residents scrambling to assist before professional rescue teams arrived.

Responding swiftly to the disaster, County Executive Committee Members Leah Audan Lokala (Tourism, Culture, Natural Resources, and Climate Change), David Maraka (Administration and Disaster Management), and Triza Amoni (Energy and Mineral Resources) visited the scene to coordinate the rescue operation and offer comfort to affected families.

Addressing reporters at the site, CECM Audan Lokala reassured the public of the county’s commitment to saving lives and mitigating further risks

“Our priority is to rescue the trapped miners and ensure the safety of all other artisanal miners in the area. We are working closely with all disaster response teams to expedite this operation and prevent such incidents in the future.”

This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards in artisanal mining, an industry that provides livelihoods for hundreds in Turkana North. County officials have since cordoned off the site, urging miners to suspend activities until the ongoing rescue mission is complete.

The County Government has pledged to review safety measures at artisanal mining sites and explore long-term solutions to enhance the well-being of miners.
