Prominent human rights activist and former Secretary General of the Kenya Civil Servants Union, Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity, has called for the immediate arrest and detention without bail of Deputy Inspector General of Police Douglas Langat over the murder of Albert Ojwang’.
In a scathing statement, Dr. Kinity warned that justice for Ojwang’ will remain elusive if DIG Langat is not swiftly apprehended, further accusing President William Ruto of complicity in the case.
The demand follows last week’s Senate session where Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome faced tough questions over Ojwang’s mysterious death in police custody. According to Dr. Kinity, the IG’s responses were evasive, suggesting either incompetence or that real power lies with his deputy, Langat.
“As Inspector General, Kanja did not need permission to question his officers over Ojwang’s murder. Yet, he appeared clueless before the Senate. Either he is a powerless stooge, or Langat is the de facto police boss,” Dr. Kinity stated.
Ojwang’ was arrested under controversial circumstances before his death, with reports indicating that DIG Langat not only filed a complaint against him but also directly ordered his arrest. Despite this, Langat remains free, raising concerns about witness intimidation and evidence tampering.
“If investigations are to be fair, Langat should have been arrested without bond from day one. His continued freedom proves this is a sham,” Dr. Kinity declared.
He further alleged that Langat’s close ties to President could be influencing the case, comparing it to past high-profile murders, such as Jacob Juma, Chris Msando, and the 2013 disappearances of Dickson Bogonko Bosire and Albert Muriuki, where investigations were deliberately stalled.
Dr. Kinity drew parallels between Ojwang’s case and previous extrajudicial killings, citing how:
Albert Muriuki, a senior advisor to former President, vanished after a distress call to his mother. No CCTV footage from State House was ever examined.
Chris Msando’s murder saw CCTV footage revealing an unidentified woman driving his car on the night he was killed, yet the case was buried.
Jacob Juma had publicly named his killers, including senior politician, before his assassination. No arrests were made.
“Ruto is using the police to harass, torture, and kill Kenyans. Ojwang’s case will be swept under the rug like the others unless action is taken now,” Dr. Kinity warned.
The activist accused President Ruto of shielding Langat, alleging daily meetings between the two to manipulate the investigation. He warned that Ruto could use diversionary tactics, such as the recent reopening of the Kenya-Somalia border—to shift public attention away from the case.
“Just like the ICC post-election violence cases were sabotaged, Ojwang’s murder is being watered down. Kenyans must demand justice before more witnesses ‘disappear’,” he cautioned.
Dr. Kinity dismissed the ongoing probe as “gimmick and garbage,” insisting that no credible outcome can be expected unless Langat is arrested and Ruto stops interfering.
