Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity Challenges Raila Odinga to Reveal Coup Plotters or Face Legal Action

Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second

Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity, a counselor, human rights activist, and former Secretary General of the Kenya Civil Servants Union, has issued a strong statement challenging Raila Odinga to disclose the individuals behind the alleged coup attempt against President William Ruto or face legal consequences for making false claims.

Odinga recently claimed that he played a role in preventing a military coup on June 25, 2024, but his failure to provide further details has raised serious concerns.

Dr. Kinity argues that such an allegation is too grave to be left unverified, as it directly affects the security and welfare of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel.

“So far, no one knows whether some KDF officers have already been killed in relation to these allegations or not. It all started as a joke when Oscar Sudi sent a chilling warning to General Francis Omondi Ogola, and all of a sudden, the General was dead in a helicopter crash a short while later,” Dr. Kinity stated.

He pointed out that the Kenyan government has yet to provide clear explanations for at least five military helicopter crashes since President Ruto took office.

KDF Salaries and Possible Political Motives

Dr. Kinity further linked the alleged coup claims to the poor remuneration of KDF personnel, comparing their salaries to those of neighboring countries.

“The minimum monthly pay for KDF is $55, while Tanzanian soldiers earn $413, Burundian soldiers $178, and Rwandan soldiers $170. Could it be that the government feared a reaction from KDF officers over their meager pay and decided to pre-empt it by fabricating a coup attempt?” he questioned.

He suggested that the claim might be a strategy to instill fear among soldiers and prevent them from protesting their poor working conditions.

Historical Parallels and Fears of Political Suppression

Drawing parallels to past government tactics, Dr. Kinity recalled how former President Daniel Moi used the so-called Mwakenya movement to suppress dissent, arresting, torturing, and even killing innocent Kenyans under the pretext of national security threats.

“Could this be a scheme to arrest innocent Kenyans, accuse them of a fake coup attempt, and create fear ahead of the 2027 elections?” he asked.

Dr. Kinity warned that if the issue is not addressed transparently, it could have serious repercussions for Kenya’s stability. He insisted that unless KDF salaries are increased to at least Ksh 50,000 per month, tensions within the military will continue to grow.

He concluded by demanding that Odinga either provide evidence to support his claims or be taken to court for making unverified allegations.
