Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity: Corruption Is the Root of Kenya’s Problems, Not the Dead Leaders

Read Time:2 Minute, 44 Second
Former Union Leader, Dr Isaac Newton Kinity

Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity’s bold critique of Kenya’s governance exposes the ugly reality of corruption strangling the nation.

Kenya’s business community and farmers, who form the backbone of the country’s economy, are held hostage by political leaders who demand bribes under the guise of protection.

These unethical practices cripple entrepreneurship, discourage foreign investments, and sabotage job creation, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and despair for millions of Kenyans.

Dr. Kinity’s central argument is simple: no president in Kenya can succeed without eradicating corruption, supporting farmers, and protecting businesses.

Yet, the political elite continuously frustrates these efforts by preying on the very people they are elected to serve.

Instead of creating policies to enable growth, they threaten to destroy businesses and livelihoods unless their demands are met.

This systemic extortion creates an environment where businesses operate under constant fear, and farmers struggle to break even, let alone thrive.

What stands out in Dr. Kinity’s critique is his condemnation of the persistent attempts by current politicians to deflect attention from their crimes by blaming the dead. Accusing past leaders like the late Daniel arap Moi, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Jomo Kenyatta, and others has become a convenient scapegoat for politicians seeking to dodge responsibility.

How can we hold deceased individuals accountable? The dead cannot defend themselves, stand trial, or return stolen wealth.

Dr. Kinity rightly points out that Kenyan law is clear: no one can be accused without the chance to defend themselves.

Therefore, dragging the names of deceased leaders into corruption debates serves no purpose other than to confuse the public and shield the living looters.

Even more troubling is the trend of implicating the children of these late leaders in crimes committed by their parents.

This is a direct violation of justice. The sins of the father cannot, and should not, be visited upon the children.

If the offspring of former leaders have committed their own crimes, let the law pursue them for those acts, not for historical wrongs they had no part in.

Dr. Kinity calls for a focus on the living looters who have plundered billions from loans, grants, and taxes.

He goes further to argue that the looters of public funds, who have siphoned trillions of Kenya shillings and are alive, would not exceed 2,000 in number.

It is, therefore, both feasible and necessary to arrest, prosecute, and jail these individuals. This task, though daunting, is within reach if the political will exists.

Prosecuting and jailing these looters would send a clear message that corruption will no longer be tolerated and would mark a turning point in Kenya’s governance.

Eradicating corruption is not just a moral obligation; it is an economic necessity. The billions stolen by corrupt officials could be used to transform Kenya’s infrastructure, improve healthcare, support farmers, and create sustainable jobs.

These funds could lift millions out of poverty and put Kenya on a path to prosperity. Dr. Kinity reminds us that allowing past corruption to justify current or future looting is a betrayal of Kenya’s constitution and its people.

President William Ruto and his administration must take these insights seriously if they hope to succeed.
