Human rights activist Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity has alleged that the recent killing of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu is linked to high-level corruption and intimidation of legal professionals handling sensitive land cases.
Mbobu, who was representing Mr. Kungu Muigai, a cousin of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a land dispute involving influential figures, is said to have been assassinated because of his involvement in the case.
Dr. Kinity said the incident reflects a growing trend where lawyers, business leaders, and farmers who challenge those in authority face harassment, intimidation, or worse.
“Why would people kill a lawyer for representing a case of land grabbing? What is wrong in representing someone who has taken one of those in authority to a Kenyan court? This killing depicts guilt and shows the extent of decay in the current administration,” he said.
He linked the murder to what he described as a wider campaign of suppression targeting entrepreneurs and property owners, citing the case of businessman Peter Munga, whose properties were recently approved for auction over a Ksh 433 million debt dispute.
Dr. Kinity warned that such actions send the wrong signal to the business community and farmers, the backbone of Kenya’s economy.
“When business leaders are harassed and farmers exploited, unemployment rises and the economy collapses. The government should be protecting those who create jobs, not intimidating them,” he said.
According to him, corruption and mismanagement have turned Kenya into a nation of “poverty, agony, suffering, and fear,” affecting not only the poor but also workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs.
He urged the government to prioritize governance reforms and the protection of all citizens, regardless of their status.
“Every Kenyan, rich or poor, farmer or businessperson, pays taxes and deserves protection. Kenya needs immediate change in governance to restore order, justice, and prosperity,” he said.
Dr. Kinity, who is also the Chairman of the Kikimo Foundation for Corruption and Poverty Eradication, said the assassination of lawyer Mbobu should serve as a wake-up call to the nation.
