Renowned human rights activist Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity has intensified his critique of President William Ruto, applauding the growing number of Kenyans petitioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the head of state for alleged crimes against humanity.
Dr. Kinity, a staunch advocate for justice, revealed that he is among those who have personally lobbied for President Ruto’s prosecution over alleged extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and other human rights violations.
According to Dr. Kinity, the petitions, reportedly signed by over 50,000 Kenyans, highlight deep-seated grievances stemming from a pattern of abuses during Ruto’s political career.
The allegations range from land grabbing to the abduction and killing of young Kenyans, particularly from Generation Z, a concern Kinity has previously raised in public forums.
“President Ruto’s administration has been marked by unchecked impunity, and it is encouraging to see more Kenyans stepping forward to demand accountability,” Dr. Kinity said. “This is a significant step toward justice for countless families who have suffered unimaginable losses.”
Dr. Kinity further pointed to Kenya’s troubled history with the ICC, drawing parallels to the post-election violence (PEV) investigations of 2009.
He noted that during the PEV probes, witnesses were systematically eliminated or coerced into silence. “The killing and intimidation of over 500 witnesses during the ICC’s earlier investigation sent a chilling message. We cannot allow this dark chapter to repeat itself,” he said.
The latest petitions reportedly accuse President Ruto of crimes including abductions, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings linked to political dissent and security operations.
Dr. Kinity asserted that these acts constitute crimes against humanity, demanding immediate international intervention.
“As someone who has personally lobbied for justice, I can confirm that these grievances are not isolated incidents. They are part of a systemic failure to uphold the rule of law in Kenya,” Dr. Kinity remarked.
The mounting pressure has intensified scrutiny on Ruto’s administration, which has already faced allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
The President’s detractors claim that public funds have been misappropriated and developmental projects sidelined in favor of personal enrichment.
Dr. Kinity warned that the growing international attention on Kenya could pose serious consequences for the country’s leadership. “This surge in petitions to the ICC is not just a symbolic gesture, it is a clear signal that Kenyans are tired of the injustices they have endured. The era of political impunity is nearing its end,” he said.
Dr. Kinity called on the international community to monitor the situation closely, ensuring the safety of petitioners and potential witnesses.
“This is a defining moment for Kenya,” he said. “We must stand firm against intimidation and ensure that justice prevails for the victims of these heinous crimes.”
The ICC is yet to confirm whether it will open formal investigations, but legal experts suggest that the scale of the petitions could compel the court to take action.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on President Ruto, whose political maneuvers face unprecedented scrutiny both at home and abroad.
