Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, led by its visionary CEO, Dr. Martin Wafula, has taken a monumental step in advancing healthcare access for Nairobi residents.

In collaboration with Governor Johnson Sakaja, the hospital successfully registered over 500 individuals onto the Social Health Authority (SHA) platform, ensuring affordable and equitable access to essential health services.

A key factor behind this success is the dedicated team of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who were directly employed by Mama Lucy Hospital to support this initiative.

These CHPs played a critical role in mobilizing and educating residents about the benefits of SHA, visiting neighborhoods and ensuring that even the most marginalized populations were included in the program.

Dr. Wafula emphasized the importance of the CHPs in achieving this milestone, stating, “Our Community Health Promoters are the backbone of this initiative. They are the bridge between the hospital and the community, ensuring that every family understands the value of SHA and the health benefits it brings. Their dedication has been instrumental in making this a success.”

The SHA program, central to Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, provides a comprehensive package of healthcare services, including outpatient and inpatient care, maternal health, and emergency medical services.

By reducing the financial burden of healthcare, the platform empowers families to seek medical attention without hesitation.

Governor Sakaja lauded the efforts of Dr. Wafula and the Mama Lucy Hospital team, highlighting how such collaborations align with his administration’s mission to transform Nairobi’s healthcare system.

“This initiative shows what can be achieved when health institutions and community leaders work together. With SHA, we are not just treating illnesses; we are investing in the well-being of our people,” the governor remarked.

The residents, many of whom live in low-income areas, expressed gratitude for the initiative, calling it a lifesaver.

For many families, registration on SHA means access to quality healthcare they could previously not afford.
