Farmers in Baringo call for more sensitization on Agro-ecology farming

Farmers in Baringo County have called for the need for more sensitization on Agro-ecology farming.
Speaking during a Community food dialogue/Baraza at loboi-Marigat in Baringo County on July 25, 2023, the farmers majority of whom are also opinion leaders cited lack of knowledge as a major challenge to both food security and food safety.
They called on Slow Food Kenya-the Organisation convener of the community food dialogues to put more effort on sensitization of farmers on current trends.
Led by Sammy Chepkuto(Chairman Kishochon presidia), the locals noted that there are numerous opportunities that local farmers can do towards food security and food safety but only if they are empowered with the right information on Agro-ecology.
“Farmers have great potential. They only need such forums so that they can get the right information,” he said.
Sentiments echoed by Sub-county agriculture officer John Omollo who stated that the county government of Baringo will continue to partner with like minded organizations such as Slow Food Kenya in empowering farmers.
The meeting was also attended by area Chief Denis Rotich who challenged farmers to make good use of knowledge from such forums towards improving their production in farms.
It should be noted that Slow Food Kenya continues to carry out series of such community food dialogues with an aim to promote community driven advocacy for pro-people policies with a believe that effective advocacy starts with grassroots movement.
This will result in communities taking a central role in advocating for their rights, agro-ecology, food safety and healthy food system.
Elphas Masanga from Slow Food Kenya says the forums will be carried out in all the counties of operation.
“We can only have a healthy nation if we embark on Agro-ecology where no harmful chemicals are involved,” he said.
