Former Lugari Member of Parliament and former Minister for Rural Development Cyrus Jirongo has died following a road accident.
According to Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo, the former legislator died after being involved in a head on collision along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
Leaders across the country have paid tribute to the late politician, describing him as an influential figure in Kenyan politics and public life.
Central Organization of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli mourned Jirongo as a national asset. “This morning, with a lot of shock and sadness, I learnt of the passing of Cyrus Jirongo, who was an asset to our community and Kenya. We loved him, but God loved him more,” Atwoli said.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka also paid tribute to the former MP. “Death has robbed us of one of our greatest sons. Rest in peace, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” Lusaka said.
Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi conveyed his condolences to the family, friends and residents of Lugari. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the people of Lugari during this difficult moment,” he said.
Jirongo was born on March 21, 1961, in Lugari, Kakamega County. He served as Lugari MP between 1997 and 2002 and later from 2007 to 2013. He also served as Minister for Rural Development during his political career.
Beyond politics, Jirongo was a businessman with interests in real estate and other ventures. In 2013, he declared his interest in the presidency before later contesting the Kakamega Senate seat, which he lost.
His death comes months after the loss of his daughter, Elizabeth Lorraine Khalamwa, who passed away earlier this year.
