In a remarkable display of cooperation and mutual commitment to progress, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and Israel Ambassador to Kenya H.E Michael Lotem embarked on a joint mission to foster collaboration in the areas of education, healthcare, and agriculture.
Kihika stressed the importance of investing in early childhood education, emphasizing its role in securing the county’s long-term economic strength.
“Early Childhood Education is one of the greatest investments we can bequeath our children. If we want to invest in the prosperity of Nakuru County, we must invest in the early education of our children so that their talents can be fully nurtured and developed for the future,” Governor Susana Kihika.
To combat high dropout rates, particularly in the face of poverty affecting 20% of the population, Governor Kihika announced the initiation of a school feeding program in public early childhood development (ECD) schools.
The innovative aspect of this program lies in the incorporation of Spirulina, a nutrient-dense algae, into the children’s diets.
“This is why we decided to initiate a school feeding program in our public ECDs to retain children in schools. Our intention is to incorporate Spirulina, a nutrient-dense algae, into the children’s diets to fight malnutrition,” Governor Susan Kihika.
She revealed that, to make this vision a reality, Engineers Without Borders, an Israeli NGO, has been lending their expertise and advanced technology.
“We have Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Engineers without Borders Israel. Our joint mission is to enhance mutual activities for promoting food security in Nakuru County. We’re thrilled to collaborate on promoting sustainable local production of highly nutritious products for all ages. Our focus will be on supporting the most vulnerable members of our community who are at risk of malnutrition,” H.E Kihika.
She further asserted that the successful pilot project in Njoro sub-county demonstrated the potential of Spirulina farming to combat malnutrition and boost the health of young learners.
The Israeli Ambassador to Kenya Michael Lotem praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of addressing food security and agriculture in addition to education and healthcare.
“We have seen Israeli companies already contributing to the agriculture sector, from greenhouses to exporting directly to Israel. We are confident that this partnership will bring about positive changes and opportunities for both countries,” Israel Ambassador to Kenya Michael Lotem.
In addition to their focus on education, Governor Kihika and the Israeli delegation also delved into the health sector; a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with Asthma Healthcare Solutions, an Israeli company specializing in healthcare management.
A partnership which she says aimsat enhancing medical diagnostics, information technology, and treatment of specialized diseases like diabetes and hypertension in public hospitals.
