Junior Secondary School Teacher Arrested for Defiling Grade 7 Pupil in Maize Field

Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

A junior secondary school teacher was apprehended and taken into custody over the weekend after he was caught in the act of defiling a grade 7 pupil in a maize plantation.

Eric Rotich, 38, who works as a teacher, was discovered by outraged members of the public who heard distressed cries from the girl seeking help in the maize farm.

Prior to the incident, Rotich had intercepted the pupil, who was carrying maize flour from a nearby posho mill, and parked his motorcycle on the roadside.

Mohammed Jireh, the Tindiret sub-county police commander, confirmed the arrest of the teacher, emphasizing that he would face legal consequences.

“The victim has been taken to Meteitei sub-district hospital for treatment and further investigation, as this is a serious matter,” Jireh stated.

William Lulei, the Chief of Soba location, mentioned that the suspect, along with the defiled child, was handed over to him by concerned members of the public.

They were subsequently taken to Songhor police station, and the teacher is expected to appear at the Maraba law courts in Tinderet.

Lulei revealed that the teacher narrowly escaped the wrath of the public, as the police arrived in time to protect him following Lulei’s call for assistance.

Tinderet sub-county faces significant challenges in terms of girls’ education, with the lowest transition rate among the six Nandi sub-counties.

Early marriages and dropouts resulting from early pregnancies contribute to this issue.

Chalan Foundation, an NGO operating in the area, supports young mothers in their efforts to return to school. The foundation reports that many school-going girls become pregnant through defilements, often going unreported to authorities.

Margaret Koskei, the chairwoman of the foundation, highlighted that due to poverty and the harsh environment in Tinderet, families choose to remain silent and marry off their daughters at a young age.

“We are dedicated to reintegrating all young mothers into the education system, and many have already returned to school through our efforts, some even completing university education,” Koskei stated.
