Kibet Kirui alias pumpit

Kibet Kirui’s early investment in youth engagement through football is now reshaping the political terrain in Njoro. His previously organized football tournament did not only succeed in attendance and execution but also ignited a visible shift in youth alignment, forcing his main political rival, Njoro MP Charity Kathambi, into a reactive posture.

Kirui’s tournament came at a time when youth participation in constituency politics had grown increasingly passive. By using football as both a mobilization and dialogue tool, he connected with young people in a way that felt organic and timely. The outcome was immediate. Youth groups across Njoro began openly associating with his leadership style, praising the consistency, organization, and sense of inclusion the tournament created.

It is this growing momentum that has unsettled the political status quo. With Kirui already having tested and delivered a successful model, MP Charity Kathambi has now announced plans to organize a football tournament of her own. While such initiatives are not inherently problematic, the sequence of events tells its own story. Kirui acted first, delivered results, and captured the youth narrative. Kathambi is now attempting to recover lost ground.

It is worthy to  note that copying an already successful initiative rarely shifts momentum back to the original office holder. Instead, it often validates the innovator. In this case, Kirui’s early action has set the benchmark, meaning any similar effort by his rival is automatically measured against his success rather than standing on its own merit.

On the ground, many youths view the latest tournament announcement as a catch up move rather than leadership. The absence of prior youth centered programs under the same framework has reinforced perceptions that the initiative is driven more by political pressure than long term planning. As a result, the narrative continues to tilt in Kirui’s favour.

By forcing his rival to adopt his strategy, Kirui has achieved a critical political advantage. He is no longer just campaigning for relevance. He is shaping the agenda. Kathambi’s response, rather than neutralizing his rise, has amplified it by confirming where the real momentum lies.
