Kenya Women Leaders’ Statement on Governor Susan Kihika’s Absence Sparks Public Backlash

Read Time:2 Minute, 53 Second

A press statement by a section of Kenya’s women leaders defending Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika’s absence from office has ignited a fierce public debate, with many Kenyans expressing outrage over what they see as misplaced priorities and selective advocacy.

The statement, released on March 25, 2025, sought to reaffirm support for Governor Kihika, who has been away from office following the birth of her twins. It called for an end to gendered attacks against her and emphasized the need for society to recognize the challenges that women in leadership face, particularly in balancing public service and motherhood.

Despite the goodwill from women leaders, the statement has not sat well with many Kenyans, who have taken to social media to criticize the governor and her political allies for what they describe as double standards. A major point of contention is the governor’s decision to seek maternity care abroad while Nakuru’s healthcare system struggles with inadequate facilities and staffing.

Sammy Kamau, a concerned citizen, was among those who called out Kihika’s administration for neglecting the county’s health sector. “After running down the health sector of Nakuru County, she flew abroad to get world-class services in the USA. Mothers all over Nakuru County are calling her back home to address the health challenges, especially in maternities,” he wrote.

Others, like Kibet Tanui Chirchir Loptany, questioned Kihika’s confidence in the very hospitals she oversees. “She is in charge of all hospitals in Nakuru County; how did she not trust these institutions to deliver on them?” he asked.

Critics also faulted the governor for her prolonged silence and lack of official communication regarding her absence. Mionki RM likened the situation to biblical times, stating, “She let the people of Nakuru down by not communicating. If I were her, I would have regular official communication via formal channels for reassurance. The DG can also issue regular communiques if they are together.”

Similarly, Patriotizer Ogian highlighted what he sees as a selective approach by women leaders in addressing issues affecting women in Kenya. “You didn’t say anything when [Meru Governor Kawira] Mwangaza was impeached! Again, we agree all women undergo difficulties during delivery, but are there no hospitals in Kenya to handle this? Or is she more special than our mothers?”

While the backlash has largely focused on governance and healthcare issues, the women leaders’ statement has also sparked discussions on the broader challenges facing women in leadership. The statement argued that female politicians are often subjected to unfair scrutiny and unrealistic expectations, calling for a shift in societal perceptions.

However, many Kenyans remain unconvinced. Dominic Oyaro Ongera pointed out the stark contrast in attention given to different women’s struggles, saying, “A woman died in Kisii while giving birth-that’s normal because she’s poor due to negligence from medical practitioners. Another one was assaulted, again that’s okay as long as you are poor. Statements come only when a fellow rich guy is touched.”

The growing frustration underscores a deeper dissatisfaction with leadership in Nakuru County. Many residents believe that while Kihika has the right to maternity leave, her administration has failed to prioritize healthcare for ordinary citizens. Benson Okoth summed up the outrage, saying, “Imagine these leaders draining our coffers and flying abroad to deliver twins! Them taking our taxes to deliver babies abroad while thousands of mothers in Nakuru lack essential maternity care. We need to drain the swamp!”
