In a remarkable display of solidarity, women political leaders and grassroots activists from Kenya recently convened at a breakfast meeting organized by the SDG Kenya Forum.
With the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) and POLYCOM Development, a women empowerment and girl child welfare organization, taking the lead, the event sought to advocate for gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive communities.
Under the slogan “Leave No One Behind,” participants actively engaged in the formulation of policies and daily actions to expedite the establishment of operational frameworks that address issues affecting every individual, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and a thriving society.
Florence Syevuo, the Executive Director of SDG Kenya Forum, passionately addressed the gathering, highlighting the pivotal role of leadership in achieving the SDGs.
She emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls, urging them to utilize available spaces to amplify their voices and effect tangible change towards the attainment of the SDGs.
Hon. Esther Passaris, the Women’s Representative of Nairobi County, spoke with confidence about the achievement of the SDGs, stressing the need for women to occupy the forefront of this endeavor.
She shed light on the significance of family planning in breaking the cycle of poverty, emphasizing that lack of education, resources, and understanding about family planning hinder progress. Passaris further emphasized the importance of human rights and called for the humane treatment of every citizen.
Senator Catherine Muma highlighted the criticality of empowering women through education, budgeting, and funding. By ensuring an educated community, Muma believes that issues such as gender-based violence can be effectively managed.
She stressed the necessity of establishing one-stop centers for GBV victims, supported by clear policies and legislation that facilitate budgeting and promote SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 17, targeting poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, education, and decent work and economic growth.
Hon. Beatrice Elachi, Member of Parliament for Dagoreti North constituency, passionately advocated for sensitization and policy-making on gender equality, calling for an expansion of the horizon across all SDGs.
Elachi recognized the significance of inclusivity in promoting equality, with a strong emphasis on empowering women as a powerful tool for addressing the SDGs before the 2030 deadline.
The forum aims to foster inclusivity, enhance women’s rise in leadership positions, and promote gender equality.
The SDG Kenya Forum boasts a robust team dedicated to coordinating the implementation of their strategic plan, ensuring the realization of their collective vision.
