Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, under the stewardship of CEO Dr. Martin Wafula, is making bold strides in saving newborn lives and promoting women’s health.
The hospital, in collaboration with Indiana University and JKUAT University, has rolled out a groundbreaking baby resuscitation program targeting nurses, with a special focus on managing respiratory distress and severe asphyxia in newborns.
The program aims to build a strong network of skilled trainers, starting with 13 master trainers already equipped with life-saving techniques.
These 13 will, in turn, train 39 more nurses, who will extend the knowledge to an additional 139 nurses across various departments, including the Pediatric Unit, Newborn Unit, and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Remarkably, over the past seven months, Mama Lucy has recorded zero mortality cases among babies born with respiratory complications and asphyxia, a clear testament to the program’s impact.
Beyond saving newborn lives, Mama Lucy is also at the forefront of advocating for women’s health and gender equality.
The hospital has actively participated in International Women’s Day celebrations, using the platform to champion women’s rights and health awareness.
Leading this charge is Dr. Dorcas Kemunto, the first-ever female chair of Mama Lucy Hospital’s board. In an upcoming event, Dr. Kemunto will sensitize mothers on the importance of self-care, with a special focus on cancer awareness.
She will also conduct a live demonstration on how to use self-test kits for cancer screening, encouraging women to take charge of their health.
Dr. Wafula emphasized the hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring all departments remain fully functional.
“Our doctors and healthcare workers regularly attend refresher courses to stay updated on the latest medical practices. We are not only saving lives but also empowering our staff and community,” he said.
