Read Time:2 Minute, 38 Second

In the heart of Nakuru, a towering presence in the political and business realms has captured the community’s attention.

Sam Mburu, husband to Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, is a figure whose journey is marked by triumphs and legal battles, exemplifying the intricate weave of public and private life.

Political Influence

Sam Mburu’s political journey commenced during the 2013 campaigns when he solidified a formidable alliance with President William Ruto. He was instrumental in propelling Susan Kihika’s triumphant 2017 election campaign, which ultimately led to their marriage in a lavish traditional wedding ceremony in Laikipia in November 2020.

Distinguished politicians, including President William Ruto, Hon. Aisha Jumwa, and MP Oscar Sudi, graced the grand event.

Business Ventures

However, beyond the political arena, Mburu is an astute businessman.

He holds a directorship at Landmark Freight Services, a thriving enterprise with branches both in Mombasa and China.

His real estate portfolio comprises properties located in various areas, underscoring his sound investment strategies.

Personal and Legal Challenges

Yet, in the midst of his achievements, Mburu’s personal life is embroiled in complex legal disputes.

His separation from his first wife, Beatrice Wanjiku, was marred by heated custody battles and contentious maintenance claims.

Allegations of mistreatment by Mburu’s current wife, Susan, added further layers of complexity to the situation.

Ultimately, the court ruled in favor of joint custody and a substantial monthly maintenance allowance.

Complex Custody Dispute

Mburu’s divorce proceedings with Beatrice Wanjiku included a custody battle over their two children.

While Mburu sought custody, Beatrice pressed for custody as well as a monthly maintenance sum of Sh757,000 for two years.

In her affidavit, she alleged mistreatment of the children by Susan, claiming that Mburu was often absent during their time together.

She accused Susan of using derogatory language and physically distancing herself from the children, dubbing her “grandy.”

Financial Claims

The legal battle extended to financial claims, with Beatrice contending that Mburu had set a financial standard for their family.

Their family house in Kilimani reportedly cost Sh757,000 monthly. Beatrice, in her court filings, emphasized her contribution to their wealth.

She had a stable job as a personal assistant to the managing director of the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries, earning Sh130,000.

Mburu convinced her to leave her job and embark on a business venture selling electrical goods in a shop along River Road.

Tax Evasion Allegations

In 2019, Mburu found himself at the center of a tax evasion controversy involving Sh64 million.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) accused him, along with Kenya Bureau of Standards officials, of colluding with three companies to undervalue goods imported from Dubai.

Senior counsel Tom Ojienda was also apprehended in connection with the case, and a close associate of Mburu revealed that six of his vehicles were impounded in the process.

Misrepresented Imports

The companies involved, Gendipe Enterprises and Rupai Trading Limited, were accused of deliberately concealing imported goods to evade taxes, with the alleged assistance of Landmark, customs officials, and Kenya Bureau of Standards representatives.

These companies initially claimed the imported goods were machinery, but a subsequent investigation unveiled their true nature as cooking oil.
