The Nakuru County Government has deleted a social media post suggesting the conversion of part of Afraha Stadium’s land for housing projects following public outcry.

The now-removed Facebook post had proposed using portions of the stadium grounds for affordable housing units.

The suggestion sparked immediate backlash from residents and sports stakeholders who view the move as a betrayal of longstanding commitments to upgrade the facility.

Afraha Stadium has been undergoing renovations since 2021, with KSh 650 million allocated through the Kenya Urban Support Programme for upgrades to international standards.

The county’s 2024/2025 budget included an additional KSh 695.6 million for the project.

Despite these allocations, construction stalled in 2024 with the contractor abandoning the site. The stadium remains incomplete, with promised upgrades including expanded seating, modern facilities, and improved playing surfaces yet to materialize.

County officials have not commented on the deleted post or explained its rationale.

The silence has fueled speculation about potential plans to repurpose the land while the stadium project remains unfinished.

Local sports organizations and residents have condemned the housing proposal, demanding the county honor its commitment to complete the stadium as originally planned.
