Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika is under fire as a significant number of Nakuru County MCAs criticize her administration for allegedly misusing county funds to sponsor a retreat (MCA’S allies to her) currently taking place in Mombasa.

The MCAs allege that the retreat was organized without the necessary budget approval from the county assembly, raising questions about transparency and the prioritization of county resources.

According to them, the ongoing Mombasa retreat, reportedly orchestrated by County Secretary Samuel Mwaura, has caused division among Nakuru’s MCAs.

Karanja, MCA for Naivasha East, expressed frustration that only a select group of MCAs was invited, while the majority were left out. “This retreat is happening while pressing issues affecting Nakuru residents go unaddressed. Instead of being in Mombasa to discuss the majority leader’s role—something that’s still in court—the administration should focus on improving our county,” Karanja argued.

MCA Gathanwa stressed the need for county leadership to engage directly with the people. “We want mama mboga and other everyday citizens to have the freedom to question the governor directly about her administration’s performance. This will happen through town hall meeting ,” he said.

Keringet MCA and Majority Leader William Mutai emphasized the need for a supplementary budget to address urgent local concerns, including overdue payments for casual workers, who have reportedly gone unpaid for over two months.

“Our county’s workers are suffering. The executive must wake up to its responsibilities and address these issues immediately instead of using funds for retreats,” Mutai stated

Deputy Speaker Ngware Ng’ang’a joined the growing chorus of criticism, questioning the rationale behind hosting the Mombasa retreat without budget approval.

Ng’ang’a emphasized that county resources should focus on Nakuru’s development needs, such as improving roads, healthcare, and educational services.

“Whoever advised the governor on this retreat has misled her. We need to prioritize our county’s development over unnecessary expenses,” Ng’ang’a remarked.

The Mombasa retreat has intensified divisions within the Nakuru County Assembly, with many MCAs calling for accountability.

The assembly members demanded that all county spending adhere to the appropriation process, ensuring transparency and alignment with Nakuru’s pressing needs.

They argue that while leaders enjoy a retreat, Nakuru residents are left dealing with inadequate healthcare and poor infrastructure.
