Nakuru Nyayo Gardens, a popular green space in the heart of Nakuru City, has become a subject of public frustration due to its weekly closure every Monday.

Opened on December 1st, 2021, as a recreational spot for families and visitors, the gardens are managed by the Nakuru County Government’s Department of Water, Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources.

A public notice at the entrance outlines the rules and regulations for visitors, including the operating hours: from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, with the gardens remaining closed on Mondays.

According to the notice, children below the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult, large gatherings require a permit, and activities like preaching, hawking, and photography without a permit are prohibited.

However, many residents and visitors have expressed disappointment over the Monday closure. Mary Njeri, a resident of Nakuru, voiced her frustration: “I work all week and only have Mondays off to spend time with my family in a peaceful environment like Nyayo Gardens. It’s disheartening to find it closed every Monday.”

Peter Kipkemboi, a businessman who frequently visits Nakuru for meetings, shared his views: “The gardens provide a refreshing break from the city’s hustle. Closing it on Mondays affects those of us who are in town for work. I urge Governor Susan Kihika to reconsider this closure and allow us to enjoy this beautiful space any day of the week.”

A Freelance Photographer who depends on clients visiting Nyayo Gardens,  added, “As a photographer, I often depend on clients who come here in Nyayi gardens  to relax for shoots. The closure on Mondays means I have to look for alternative locations, which is inconvenient. The county should reconsider its decision.”

The county government maintains that the gardens are closed every Monday for routine maintenance and to ensure they remain a clean, safe, and serene environment for the rest of the week.

However, the frustration expressed by residents and visitors alike suggests that alternative arrangements or a revised schedule might be necessary. Until then, those planning a visit are advised to check the opening hours in advance to avoid disappointment.
