Public outrage is mounting over the tragic death of a young mother at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, with Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja now calling for the impeachment of Governor Susan Kihika.

The Senator is accusing Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of failing to hold the county leadership accountable for the ongoing health crisis.

The Senator expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Elizabeth, a young mother who died at PGH while seeking maternity care, describing it as a painful reflection of the collapse in Nakuru’s public health system.

She also extended heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families who continue to suffer in silence under what she termed a broken and negligent healthcare regime.

“This cannot be swept under the rug. We must establish what truly happened, and those found culpable must be held accountable,” she declared in a statement posted on Facebook.

She lashed out at the continued reports of medical negligence, lack of accountability, and even shameful conduct by some health workers at PGH Nakuru.

According to grieving families, some hospital staff responded to their pain with ridicule instead of compassion, a reflection of a deeply troubling culture within the facility.

The Senator accused Governor Susan Kihika’s administration of overseeing a spike in child and maternal deaths, terming it a dangerous trend that should alarm every right-thinking citizen.

“Ever since Susan’s administration took over, we have witnessed very high child mortality. This is not just unfortunate, it’s unacceptable,” she said.

She faulted MCAs for failing in their oversight role, stating that they are the ones mandated to introduce a motion of impeachment when the executive fails.

“MCAs are the first line of defense for the people. But they have refused or are unable to act, allowing the health sector to collapse under their watch,” she noted.

She announced that she has already taken steps at the Senate, including filing a petition and requesting a complete audit of PGH through the Senate Committee on Health.

“We must explore every available avenue to find an antidote to these reckless, avoidable deaths,” she said.

The Senator also raised alarm over a constitutional violation, pointing out that when Governor Kihika traveled abroad, she failed to formally transfer power to her deputy, creating a dangerous leadership vacuum in the county.

“We have a deputy governor who has been reduced to a ceremonial figure. When Governor Susan Kihika left the country, she failed to legally and officially hand over instruments of power, as the Constitution demands. So who was in charge of Nakuru County when this tragedy occurred?” she asked.

She went further to support calls from residents seeking to dissolve the entire county administration citing systemic mismanagement and increasing public frustration.

“I stand with the many residents who are calling for the dissolution of this administration. The mismanagement, the neglect, and the suffering are no longer tolerable. People are tired and hurting, and as they watch their loved ones die in hospitals meant to save lives, they demand change,” she said.

She especially condemned the irony of Governor Kihika traveling to the United States for maternity services, while back home, women like Elizabeth are dying in delivery rooms.

“One mother flew to the U.S. and came back with a healthy baby. Another mother, Elizabeth, went to PGH and never returned home. We cannot normalize this injustice,” she said.

With the MCAs accused of inaction, the Senator declared her full support for a popular initiative by ordinary citizens to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor.

“If the MCAs will not act, then the people must. I now support the citizens who have begun this exercise. This injustice must stop. Our people deserve a healthcare system that values and protects life, not one that turns public hospitals into death traps,” she concluded.

As public pressure continues to mount, all eyes are now on Nakuru’s MCAs and whether they will rise to their constitutional duty, or risk being seen as complicit in the ongoing healthcare disaster.
