Nakuru Town West Member of Parliament, Samuel Arama, has broken his silence and defended his controversial decision to draw his firearm during July protests organized by opposition leader Rt Hon Raila Odinga.
The incident unfolded on July 19, 2023, when Arama found himself amidst a volatile crowd of demonstrators in Shabaab area, Nakuru.
Arama provided his account of events, explaining that he received a distressing call informing him that his hotel in the Pondamali area had come under attack from rioting youth.
Determined to assess the situation, he rushed to the scene, only to be met by a group of angry protesters who questioned his stance on the government.
“They demanded to know why I was not supporting the ‘maandamano’ (demonstrations) and accused me of being pro-government,” Arama stated.
He went on to describe how the situation escalated as the protesters became increasingly hostile.
In a bid to disperse the agitated crowd and clear a path for himself, Arama resorted to drawing his firearm. This action sent shockwaves through the crowd, causing many to flee for safety while they simultaneously engaged the police in clashes in other parts of the city.
The protesters had effectively barricaded the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway at key points, including Kolen and Eveready roundabout, leading to disruptions in the flow of traffic and causing nearby businesses to shut down due to concerns about potential looting.
