A group of UDA senators expressed condemnation towards Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday. Murkomen was expected to appear before the Senate to address questions raised by senators.

Bomet Senator Wakili Hillary Kiprotich Sigei, part of the Speaker’s panel, conveyed Murkomen’s message that he was en route from Mombasa to Nairobi.

“The communication received is that he (Murkomen) is traveling from Mombasa and is on his way to come to respond to the questions,” Sigei stated. However, this communication led to discontent among the Senators, sparking an uproar.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei questioned the legitimacy of waiting for Murkomen, highlighting that certain procedures should be followed, allowing the House to wait for cabinet secretaries only under specific circumstances.

“This house has rules, and we can only wait for cabinet secretaries if they are attending parliamentary committee proceedings or in the cabinet,” Cherargei argued, challenging the procedure for accommodating Murkomen’s request.

The UDA Senator suggested that if Murkomen was occupied, he should have rescheduled his appearance. Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana emphasized the timeliness of Murkomen’s appearance, particularly to address the leaking roof issue at JKIA, which he deemed a national embarrassment.

“I was personally waiting for CS Murkomen because we have a national embarrassment at the airport where rain is falling inside the international airport. It would have been an important session for him to clarify the issue,” Mungatana stated.

Mungatana also criticized Murkomen’s comments blaming the previous Jubilee regime for the leaking roof, questioning the relevance of discussing issues from the past.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale raised concerns about the Speaker’s decision to accept Murkomen’s delayed appearance, questioning the standing order under which the Senate paused its business to wait for the Cabinet Secretary.

On the same morning, CS Murkomen had participated in an event in Mombasa with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Earlier, Murkomen had criticized the previous government for sub-standard work on the JKIA facility and 12 other airstrips across the country, citing rushed projects that failed to meet required standards.
