A significant legal victory has been achieved in the ongoing dispute between the Nakuru County Government and Nakuru War Memorial Limited, as the Court of Appeal has ordered the immediate reopening of the War Memorial Hospital.

The ruling, issued in case number E077 of 2024, directs the formation of a five-member interim committee to manage the hospital’s operations while the land ownership issues are resolved within 60 days.

The committee will include Roselyne Wanjiru Munga, Nakuru County’s Executive Committee member for Health, and Samuel Mwangi Mwaura, the County Secretary.

This decision is expected to restore healthcare services to Nakuru residents and reinstate the jobs of over 300 employees who were affected by the hospital’s closure.

Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja Keroche, in a statement following the court’s decision, praised the ruling as a significant win for the people of Nakuru. She applauded the judiciary and all parties involved for their efforts to ensure the hospital’s reopening.

“This ruling is a win for Nakuru, after prolonged court battles that caused job losses, loss of lives, and damage to properties. My heartfelt thanks go to the judiciary, the War Memorial legal team, civil society groups, MCAs led by Majority Leader Mutai, and the people of Nakuru for their unwavering fight to reopen this hospital,” said Senator Karanja.

She stressed the importance of War Memorial Hospital in serving Nakuru’s population, stating that a city of Nakuru’s stature deserves a high-quality healthcare facility.

“Nakuru is a city, and it deserves a fully functional hospital like War Memorial. With this ruling, Nakuru residents will regain access to essential healthcare services. Hongera watu wa Nakuru; we fought a good fight,” she added.
