Senator Tabitha’s Push Triggers Nakuru County Rush to Clean Up Wakulima Market
Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second
The Nakuru County Government has moved with unusual speed to address the long-standing problems at Wakulima Market, just a after Senator Tabitha Karanja Keroche met with the market’s leadership and promised to raise their concerns in the Senate.
The county’s sudden visit and promised interventions have sparked mixed reactions, with many Nakuru residents and market traders saying the action only came after the Senator put the spotlight on their suffering.
During her meeting with market leaders, Senator Tabitha heard complaints about poor sanitation, uncollected garbage, blocked drainage, insecurity, lack of lighting, and insufficient stalls.
Traders revealed that they are forced to clean the market themselves because the county has abandoned its responsibilities.
Senator Tabitha assured them that their voices would not go unheard. She committed to tabling the matter in the Senate for urgent attention.
Less than 24 hours later, the county sent a full delegation to the market, led by County Secretary Dr. Samuel Mwaura, along with senior officials including CECM Stephen Kuria, City Manager Gitau Thabanja, and other chief officers.
They promised to clean and rehabilitate drains, concrete the access road, and involve local youth in the works all without disrupting business.
The timing of this response has raised eyebrows.
“It’s clear the county only acted after the Senator stepped in. We have complained for months and nothing happened. Now suddenly there’s interest?” said a trader who attended both the Senator’s meeting and the county’s visit.
Observers have described the county’s move as a reactive scramble rather than genuine planning. Many believe the Senator’s meeting exposed the administration’s neglect and embarrassed officials into action.
“This is what oversight looks like,” said a youth leader in Biashara Ward. “Senator Tabitha didn’t even have to set foot in the market. Her words alone forced the county to move.
