In a bid to foster unity and promote talent among the youth, Nakuru  Member of County  Assembly for Shabaab Ward  Macharia Wathiai has organized a 7-a-side football tournament within the ward on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The event, set to take place before schools reopen, aims to bring together young people from various communities in the area, offering them a platform to showcase their football skills.

Speaking about the initiative to Nakuru Times Reporter, MCA Macharia highlighted the primary goal of the tournament.

“The main aim is to bring our young youths together and showcase their talent before they go back to school. It’s also to bring our youths from different communities within our ward with a message that we are one people, one nation, and that we should always be our brother’s keepers at all times,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of unity through sports.

He further explained the decision to organize a 7-a-side tournament, acknowledging the limitations of the available playing fields.

“Why 7s? Though we don’t have a field that can accommodate 11 players, it doesn’t matter the space. Football can be played within our community grounds and nurture talent from the young age of our kids,” Macharia said, underscoring the flexibility and inclusiveness of the event.

Beyond football, the tournament is also seen as a means of providing a positive outlet for the youth.

“Football is just another way of relaxing our minds from the many challenges we face in life. You don’t have to take drugs or drink alcohol at your free time or when facing tough times in life—just play football with friends; it’s a kind of therapy,” Macharia advised, promoting sports as a healthy alternative to negative coping mechanisms.

The 7-a-side tournament is expected to draw participants from across the ward, reinforcing the spirit of community and offering the youth an opportunity to bond and grow together, regardless of their backgrounds.

With this initiative, MCA Macharia hopes to not only develop local football talent but also to strengthen the bonds of unity among the diverse communities within Shabaab Ward.
