Solai Locals Join Efforts of Re-greening in Addressing Negative Impacts of Climate Change

Members of the public in Solai, Rongai Sub county have joined hands through a tree planting initiative aimed to boost the government’s efforts in combating negative impacts of climate change.

The initiative that has on board various stakeholders among them the locals, students from neighboring schools, local administrators and the Solai-based Patel Family, besides helping re-green the area will also go a long way in ensuring environment conservation.

This, the locals say is key in addressing the various environmental challenges among them natural resources degradation.

Speaking to during the launch of the initiative at Assistant County Commissioner’s office grounds in Solai, the community members led by Charles Wawire said the community has chosen to serve as an example to the future generation.

Wawire who spoke after taking part in a tree planting exercise on a 15-acre piece of land in the area revealed that they are focusing on indigenous trees such as Podo which besides helping in matters of the environment has high commercial value being a hardwood tree.

During the exercise, at least 5000 trees sourced from the Patel Farm tree nursery in the area were planted.

Wawire who coordinated the exercise assured that the members of the community will be participating in similar exercises in various parts of Solai.

“This area of Solai, we have agreed as a community that we shall be working collectively with other partners in making sure we have a clean environment through this initiative,” he says.

Mr. George Orori on his part pointed out that for many years’ parts of Solai has had experiences as an arid area hence the initiative is timely.

According to him, involving young people in such an initiative is key as it helps impart knowledge on the importance of environment conservation as a major way of addressing negative impacts of climate change.

“By involving the students and young people at large, we are passing to them a message that they should take up matters of environment conservation seriously,” says Orori.

Similar sentiments echoed by Patel Day Secondary Deputy Principal Mr. Isaiah Wagala whose students have been participating in such initiatives.

Rongai Sub County Deputy County Commissioner William Kipchirchir and Assistant County Commissioner Solai Nancy Kibet who graced the event reiterated the government’s effort in combating climate change through tree restoration program that was launched by President William Ruto late last year with an aim to achieve 15 billion trees by 2032.

DCC Kipchirchir has lauded members of the public in Rongai for coming together towards such a noble course of community-based adaptation to climate change.

He reveals that sensitization is ongoing to ensure members of the public embrace tree planting adding that it is a collective responsibility.

“This partnership is noble in equipping the next generation of climate advocates re-growing underground trees and re-greening depleted resources,” he said.
