Tragic Rwandan Truck Driver Describes Terrifying Moments Before Fatal Londiani Accident
Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second
In a compelling account of the harrowing events, Gilbert Ntuyemungu, a 52-year-old Rwandan national behind the wheel of the truck responsible for the deadly accident at Londiani junction on June 30, shared his recollection while recovering in the hospital.
Ntuyemungu, speaking to the press on July 3, vividly recalled the heart-stopping ordeal that unfolded as he drove downhill at the Malaba junction, his brakes failing to respond.
The weight of the cement he was transporting to Uganda rendered his attempts to regain control futile, causing the truck to hurtle uncontrollably.
“I tried desperately to hold the brakes, but they wouldn’t respond. The lorry lost brakes and went downhill very fast. I was with my turn boy, but I don’t even know where he is now,” Ntuyemungu revealed.
His last memory before the catastrophe struck was the horrifying impact of the truck, crushing everything in its path. He recalled hearing the screams of terrified bystanders as the vehicle descended down the road.
Adding to the tragedy, Ntuyemungu disclosed that he had spent two days at the Nakuru-Simba Cement Factory, waiting for the cement to be loaded onto the truck destined for Uganda through Busia.
With injuries to his head, legs, and back, the father of two lost all his belongings in the crash, leaving his family uninformed about his involvement in the incident, as he couldn’t reach them by phone.
Ntuyemungu, an experienced truck driver since 1997, regularly traveled the Nakuru, Kericho-Londiani route.
Witnesses who came forward on July 1 shared that Ntuyemungu and his turn boy had parked the vehicle on the side of the road for repairs before it unexpectedly started moving downhill.
In response to the tragedy, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, on July 1, issued an order to the National Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA) to install speed detection cameras in the area, aiming to apprehend traffic offenders.
Meanwhile, the police have been directed to intensify their crackdown on traffic law violators across all roads, aiming to ensure road safety and prevent similar accidents.
