Where in the World is Governor Susan Kihika? Why Nakuru Deserves Better Than an Absent Leader

Nakuru County residents have been left in the dark, scratching their heads, and wondering:

Where is Governor Susan Kihika? Her last public engagement was on November 18, presiding over a vocational training graduation ceremony.

Since then, silence, no visibility, just a virtual vanishing act from the person elected to lead this county.

Social media has erupted with Nakuru residents humorously speculating that their governor is “working online from Texas.” Facebook user Maina Ndegwa hilariously posted,

“Nakuru governor is working online from Texas ,” triggering a storm of comments. Akweyu Dickson chimed in, “Live from Texas her excellency will be commissioning water taps in Molo ,” while Chris Omondi lamented, “The electorate is the problem. Nakuru had a working focused governor in Lee, but because of stone age politics, decided to vote for a socialite.”

The jokes may be funny, but the underlying issue is not. How does a governor, tasked with overseeing the affairs of a county with hundreds of thousands of  people, simply disappear? Why has she abandoned the people who entrusted her with their votes?

Kenya’s Constitution makes it clear that public officers must be accountable and transparent.

Article 73 emphasizes that public office is a trust, requiring those who hold it to serve with dignity and bring honor to the office.

Article 10 outlines transparency, accountability, and good governance as essential principles for leadership.

Governor Kihika, where is the accountability? Where is the transparency? How does one serve with dignity while missing in action for weeks on end?

Should Nakuru residents start a “missing person” poster campaign to locate their governor? It’s baffling that Governor Kihika finds time to tweet generic updates but cannot attend crucial county functions.

Where was she during the recent Afraha Stadium crises that needed immediate county-level intervention? How does she expect Nakuru residents to trust her leadership when her absence speaks louder than her actions?

What’s more infuriating is the lack of communication from her office. Not even her deputy or staff have offered a credible explanation for her absence. Are we to believe that governance in Nakuru County is running on autopilot?

Imagine this scenario: Nakuru residents paying taxes to fund county operations, yet their governor is missing.

Roads remain in disrepair, health facilities are underfunded, and water shortages persist, but the county’s chief executive cannot be found. Why should Nakuru residents put up with this mockery of governance?

Governor Kihika’s defenders might argue that “development is ongoing,” but leadership is more than just ribbon-cutting ceremonies and PR stunts. It’s about showing up, listening to the people, and addressing their needs in real time.

Nakuru deserves a governor who understands the weight of their responsibility. Governor Susan Kihika must step up and explain her prolonged absence. If she cannot fulfill her duties, she should consider stepping aside for someone who will. Leadership is not a part-time job, and Nakuru residents have every right to demand better.

To the voters of Nakuru, this is a wake-up call. Leadership is not about popularity contests but about choosing individuals who will prioritize service delivery over self-interest. It’s time for Governor Kihika to either show up or ship out.
