Nakuru County’s development is at risk, as internal feuds among Nakuru Members of  County Assembly within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party cause a standstill in the County Assembly.

The recent political standoff between factions loyal to ousted Majority Leader Hon. Alex Langat and current Majority Leader Hon. William Mutai has left Nakuru’s residents in suspense, uncertain about the future of the county’s essential services and infrastructure.

The turmoil began when the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) dismissed Hon. Langat’s case, effectively reinforcing Mutai’s leadership.

Langat’s allies responded by disrupting the Assembly, storming the floor, chanting, and singing defiant melodies during Speaker Hon. Karuri’s attempt to read the tribunal’s orders.

The session, intended to communicate the tribunal’s decision, was derailed, forcing Speaker Karuri to temporarily suspend the Assembly—leaving Nakuru’s legislative agenda in jeopardy.

According to documents from the PPDT, Hon. Langat’s case was struck out for failure to exhaust internal party dispute resolution mechanisms as required under the Political Parties Act and the UDA Constitution.

The ruling underscored that Langat’s approach to the tribunal without first seeking UDA’s internal remedies was procedurally flawed.

At the center of this unfolding crisis is Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Hon. Karuri. Unconfirmed Reports suggest that Karuri, allegedly influenced by executive proxies, has acted in a manner perceived to favor Langat despite the court order favoring Mutai.

His failure to enforce the tribunal’s orders has raised suspicions of contempt. If the Speaker is found to have deliberately circumvented these orders, he may face legal action under the Judicature Act and the Contempt of Court Act.

Sources within the Assembly indicate that members, dissatisfied with Karuri’s leadership, are preparing impeachment documents. An insider noted, “The Assembly cannot function when those in authority choose not to respect the law. We are ready to proceed with a no-confidence vote if this continues.” Such a move would mark a significant escalation in the power struggle and may further complicate Nakuru’s administrative paralysis.

The stakes are high. Nakuru County’s residents depend on the Assembly to approve budgets and pass legislation vital for infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social services.

Hon. Peter Palang’a, the four-term ODM MCA for Olkaria Ward, voiced his concerns about the Assembly’s paralysis, especially the stalled appropriation bill, which is critical to funding county projects.

According to Palang’a, “With no supplementary budget, Nakuru’s infrastructure development is in limbo. Roads cannot be built, services cannot be expanded, and the economic growth we aim for is at risk.” His concerns reflect the broader frustration among Nakuru’s residents who rely on these essential developments to boost the local economy and improve living standards. The prolonged standoff threatens to delay these projects for months, if not longer.

Local activist and self-styled “Shadow Nakuru Governor” Laban Omusundi has been vocal on social media about the crisis.

In a post titled A Great Crisis in Nakuru Assembly, Omusundi warned of the dangers posed by the leadership void, especially the risk of stalling infrastructure and development projects that benefit residents across the county.

Omusundi’s concerns highlight the potential economic and social impacts of prolonged legislative inaction.

The lack of a supplementary budget is expected to impact public works, such as road maintenance, healthcare facility upgrades, and educational infrastructure.

For Nakuru’s growing population, delays in these sectors could have severe consequences, affecting both quality of life and economic resilience.
