Geoffrey Mwangi Criticizes Non-Resident Leadership in Nakuru, Hints at 2027 Gubernatorial Bid

Geoffrey Mwangi, the former CEO of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), has strongly criticized the election of non-residents to the Nakuru gubernatorial seat, hinting at a possible bid for the position in 2027, although he has yet to make a formal declaration.

Speaking today at the consecration ceremony of Bishop Francis Mwangi Karuga of the Holy Spirit Churches of God, Mwangi raised concerns over Nakuru County’s leadership.

The event, held at Njoro Day Secondary School in Njoro Ward, drew notable political figures, including Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja and Njoro MP Charity Kathambi.

Mwangi argued that Nakuru’s development challenges stem from electing governors who are not residents of the county. He implied that such leaders lack a deep understanding of the county’s needs and have contributed to stagnation in local development.

“The current problems Nakuru faces in terms of development are because the one on seat is not a resident of Nakuru.

It seems she has no clue of what Nakuru people need,” he stated, in what appeared to be a veiled criticism of current governor Susan Kihika.

Mwangi urged Nakuru residents to prioritize local candidates in future elections, stating that only those rooted in the community could adequately address its concerns.

“Nakuru residents must be keen while voting, especially when it comes to the top seat,” he added.

Born and raised in Kamwaura, Nakuru, Mwangi started out as an altar boy and comes from humble beginnings. His parents were small-scale farmers, and he struggled through the school system before moving to Nairobi in 1988.

There, he settled in a one-roomed apartment in Githurai before steadily working his way up in his career, eventually being appointed CEO of NHIF in 2016.

Although Mwangi has yet to officially declare his candidacy, his remarks have fueled speculation about a potential gubernatorial bid, positioning him as a strong contender for the 2027 election.
