As discussions surrounding the possible impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua intensify, Kenyans have been called upon to reflect critically on the potential benefits or repercussions of such an action.

During the ongoing public consultations and discourse, questions have emerged about the true impact of Gachagua’s impeachment on the everyday lives of Kenyans

Dr. Isaac Newton Kinity, a prominent Kenyan critic, has raised pertinent concerns in his recent statement, questioning whether the impeachment will truly address the economic and political challenges currently facing the nation.

Kinity highlights a series of issues that, according to him, will remain unresolved even if Gachagua is removed from office.

Cost of Living:

Kinity questions whether impeaching Gachagua will result in any significant change to the soaring cost of living that continues to burden many Kenyan families. The cost of basic necessities remains a central issue for citizens across the country.

Licensing of Agricultural Activities:

Kinity points to President William Ruto’s controversial directives requiring farmers to obtain licenses for planting staple crops such as maize, potatoes, and sukuma wiki (kale), among others. He also references Ruto’s policy demanding licenses for keeping cows for milk production. According to Kinity, these measures will not be reversed with Gachagua’s impeachment.

Privatization of State Corporations:

Another issue raised is the sale of parastatals and state corporations to foreign entities, a process that Kinity argues is likely to continue, even if Gachagua is impeached. He questions the true motivation behind the impeachment and whether it is genuinely in the interest of the public.

Kinity also brings attention to the role of the Kenyan Parliament in these matters, accusing the legislative body of acting as a “rubber stamp” for President Ruto’s administration. He suggests that the MPs may support Gachagua’s impeachment, not for the benefit of the people, but to curry favor with Ruto and secure their own interests, which he claims include looting public funds.

In his conclusion, Dr. Kinity describes the impeachment effort as a “fruitless exercise” and urges Kenyans to ask themselves whose removal from office—Gachagua’s or Ruto’s—would truly benefit the nation.

As the conversation around Gachagua’s impeachment continues, the public is being urged to reflect on these questions and consider the long-term implications of their votes, should the matter come to a national referendum.

Whether the impeachment proceedings will gain traction in Parliament remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the debate over Deputy President Gachagua’s future is far from over, and Kenyans are being called upon to think critically before casting their votes.
