Suicide or Murder? More Questions over fresher Mercy Jerono’s Death at Daystar University
Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second
Mercy Jerono’s tragic death has left the community in turmoil, raising suspicions of a possible murder rather than a suicide.
Mercy Jerono, a fresh-faced newcomer to campus life, arrived at Daystar University Athi River on September 4th, eager to embark on her undergraduate nursing degree.
Accompanied by her parents, the 18-year-old settled into the university’s hostels, anticipating her academic journey.
However, her enthusiasm took an unexpected turn when the university organized a freshmen’s party after nearly a week on campus.
Mercy hesitated about attending and contemplated returning home. In a last-minute call to her mother between 6 pm and 7 pm, she expressed her decision to skip the event, preferring to spend the weekend with her family.
Tragedy struck on September 9th at 2 pm when Mercy’s family received a distressing call, urgently summoning them to Daystar University. Their daughter was in critical condition and had been rushed to Shalom Hospital.
Upon arrival at the school and later the hospital, the family encountered a wall of silence. No one was willing to divulge any information.
To their horror, they learned that Mercy had passed away. The circumstances surrounding her death raised grave concerns.
Mercy Jerono’s family was bewildered by the lack of police involvement in the incident. The case had been reported as a suicide, but the family questioned this narrative.
A postmortem report revealed a 13-centimeter-deep knife wound directly to her heart, leaving unanswered questions about where she had truly met her tragic end.
The family demanded access to CCTV footage to trace her last movements, highlighting the absence of security cameras in the entire university. They vehemently refuted claims that Mercy’s death was a suicide.
Detectives from the DCI have since launched an investigation into the Daystar University case, aiming to unravel the mysteries surrounding Mercy Jerono’s demise.
Daystar University Nairobi campus principal, Professor Micheal Bowen, representing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Laban Oyiro, expressed condolences to the family and pledged the university’s cooperation to ensure justice is served.
On Saturday, September 16th, Mercy Jerono was laid to rest in her hometown of Kapsait, Elgeyo Marakwet County, amidst a gathering of local and government leaders, including Governor Wisely Rotich, Marakwet West MP Timothy Torotich, and Woman Rep Caroline Ngelechei. They united in demanding answers and justice for the grieving family.
Governor Wisley Rotich emphasized the importance of finding the truth, stating, “If we cannot trace the person who murdered this innocent student and disappeared, then we will have failed as a country. We have lost a precious life, someone who would have graduated and come back to support her community.”
Mercy Jerono’s final resting place, surrounded by 18 trees symbolizing her 18 years on Earth, serves as a poignant reminder of the jovial, kind, and loving person the world lost.
