There was chaos at Kiamwathi PCEA Church in Nyeri County on Sunday after a group of youths stormed the premises in protest over the removal of their parish reverend by church elders.
The youth, representing seven congregations, forcefully entered the Nyeri Joy Parish headquarters, demanding the reinstatement of the reverend.
They claimed that some of the accusations leveled against the reverend were baseless and accused the elders of bypassing church members in making the decision.
The disruption halted the regular Sunday service as the youths took control of the church, locking out congregants.
The situation escalated as the youths, who arrived early in the morning, held a meeting within the church compound with Presbytery Moderator Patrick Kimathi, while confused congregants waited outside the gate.
Police officers were dispatched to maintain order as the standoff continued for nearly six hours.
One of the youths, John Kimani, criticized the elders for not involving the congregation in the decision-making process, saying,
“This church belongs to all of us. If any issues need to be resolved, they should be brought to all members. Why are the elders making decisions in secret?”
Another youth, Mary Nyakio, expressed satisfaction that their concerns were heard, stating, “We are happy that as youths, we were given a platform to express our views. While some of the accusations against the reverend were confirmed to be true, the way the situation was handled was wrong.”
After concluding his meeting with the youths, Moderator Kimathi addressed the congregation, assuring them that the reverend would remain in his position and that the issues would be resolved peacefully.
“The reverend is here, and we will work with him. Nobody is going anywhere. My appeal is that you maintain peace as members,” Kimathi said.
Following the assurances, the church finally began its Sunday service at noon, with the youths warning that they would return if the elders behind the reverend’s removal were not held accountable.
